There are 18 universities for research and theoretical training in the Netherlands. 13 universities offering training covering all areas of training, 4 specialized only in engineering, 1 in agriculture and one last considered as "Open University".

The majority of courses are based on theory and research, but some of them are professional.

Universities have between 6,000 and 30,000 students, for a total student population of over 210,000 students in the Netherlands. They are highly international oriented with students from all over the world.

Universities in the Netherlands are recognized all over the world for the quality of their teaching, research, and the overall environment put in place. A large part of the universities appear today in the first part of the world rankings like the Times Ranking or the Qs University Ranking.
